So, writers need to network.
They need to get out there and connect with other writers, maybe have a cadre of friends they work with and while not quite collaborate, they have allies in the effort.
So, I am reluctant to try that
- I do not want to bother anyone.
- the writers I do know are getting it done, not wanting to break that up
- what if I never write - I wasted their time
- what if I never write - I wasted our time
- what if I am worse than I thought?
- what if I get distracted by other things like I did when writing this blog?
and I am sure there are other reasons as well, but that is my update for the moment.

Poets Bring us all together, or at least 3 of us
Did I quit updating my blog?
Of course not. Here I am right now. Just a week later than I should be.
Here I am, and before I sputter out, I better do some explaining.
Life caught up with me, and that is not a good thing. By nature, life is a rather dull thing that I have a lot of fun doing. But I will not lie and claim I lead the life of any dynamic character. Indeed, I will rank myself among the dozen most boring souls on this side of the St. Lawrence. (Mississippi too overdone, you know that.) Now I usually have no complaints, I enjoy the simple things and have more than a mere "streak" of laziness. But this time it cost me an update of the blog I love so dearly.
I got caught up watching tv, reading about Henry Himmler, playing video games, eating, trying to shake off the results of eating by walking... so nothing at all. But it happened, and I am ashamed in a small way that I went silent for a while. But I am back. And in case you might be thinking, surely you did something more than that? No, I really did not. That just summed up the last two weeks to a perfect precis. Not a single detail missing, except perhaps understating the amount of nothing I did.
Today, I decided to live again.
I am in a bookstore today up in a great college town. As I am perusing the shelves, I notice a lady doing some perusing of her own. Being that kind of guy at times, I made the vocal observation that she was in the poetry section. I immediately admitted I was a frequent flier in that section and BAM - conversation exploded. In case you are wondering why this would trigger a conversation - who the heck checks out poetry sections? If you just thought, (I DO) you are a rare creature.
Why is this a writing topic then? Because how well we connected over the topic of poetry is a sign of how rare a creature we readers of such odd writings have become. When her husband arrived and admitted he too was a reader of poetry, indeed, he was clutching a copy of Stephen Dobyn's Velocities; the cosmos nearly came to a close right there, I would like to name drop, but she may not appreciate the attention, but when she indicated she was a published writer of poetry herself, well, I was impressed and thrilled to meet her. She confessed to a rather small readership, but the fact she put herself out there and is getting the job done triggered a sense of guilt that I am not doing the same.
"Do you write?" Yup, the ask was made. I shook my head, as updating a blog on occasion about why I don't write is hardly the stuff that makes a writer.
But it was a pleasure to meet her and her husband, and when she does a poetry reading, I will be there.
Getting herself out there, what we all should be doing... whatever out there may mean for any of us...

I went silent. Almost a week. Perhaps by the time I finish this post, let it marinate and then publish it, there may be more than a week passed me by.
I will blame summer.
Too much free time brings an emptiness of schedule casting an odd malaise of soul and spirit I guess. But I will also blame Sons of Anarchy, since I have lost 66 hours this week watching seasons 1-5. That is a lot of time gone, yet I hesitate to say wasted. Let me get back to that in a moment.
I will often argue that reality tv has killed tv, but I am wrong. I truly believe some of the best shows in history are on right now. The depth of the stories and the characters on so many shows contrast the vast wasteland of watching fake lives on tv...
Here is my list of what I watch, just to give context to my thoughts today. Actual list.
Mad Men
The Mentalist
Elementary
Sherlock
The Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
So, let us begin.
How the heck does a writer knock out anti-heroes that do what these shows have them do? Hank Moody, Sherlock, any one of the Sons, any one of the Game of Thrones ensemble... brilliant at times, all of them.
So wasting 66 hours is not really a waste, because it gave me a hard look at how lame any character I have ever attempted to create really is. Darn it.
Why don't I write? How can I compete with that brilliance?

Out Walking Again
So, I was out walking today, hoping I would have a moment of inspiration... here is what happened.
... saw a cat lying out in the middle of the road. It was very alive, just decided to lay down in the middle of the road.
... stepped around dozens of puddles and had to keep my wits about me so no car was able to give me the business with those puddles.
...listened to a literary podcast that did NOT give me any inspiration at all, and that disappointed me. Won't bash the podcast though, since it did keep me occupied for most of the walk.
... walked a different path from the normal one I do four or five laps of a day. Took a new road, no Robert Frost appeared.
... put a leg up on a bench, killed the volume in the ears and took deep breaths with the nose and eyes, breathing in and viewing in. What will jump out at me, perhaps some "Ode on a Metal Bench" moment.
... saw someone I had not seen a while but did not really talk - merely acknowledged it had been a while.
... did some battles with the normal stress demons that haunt me when allowed free time, and I have way too much of that for a while.
... thought about the Great Gatsby.
... kept the pace slow so I did not work up a sweat, just wanted to see if anything jumped out at me to write about. I really just gave the greatest hits package. I probably thought about Pepsi too, but that is just my addiction that I always think about... not really a writing topic.
So, why don't I write? Here is today! (I know, this is writing, but not what I mean...)
and then a post scrip of sorts, after I allowed this to marinate for a while before I posted...
Upon further reflection, I suppose the poet (that is not in me) can attack the opening of the walk. The cat in the road, just laying there... well that screams out metaphor and life commentary I guess. But not a poet today (or really ever).

Walking with the Librarian
As I am out walking tonight I shared a few steps with a librarian. Not metaphorically. I actually walked with a librarian for a while. I asked her what books people seemed to check out and enjoy the most. Perhaps I will tap into something here I can use...
She told me it was the familiar. The readers that came in most often were people of routine, and they liked books of routine. They liked familiar stories, form stories, and stories that had an action hero that came out on top or romantic stories that a woman was treated well. They were willing to read the same story over and over again, merely changing the character's names and setting a bit.
I guess that is why certain writers are so successful... and why some truly great talents get ignored... give the people what they want...
So, this is a blog about why I don't write.
Maybe that is reason # 89 why. What if I don't always see the happy ending? There is a reason I think the greatest American book is the Great Gatsby. Because nothing is what it seems for so many. Thoreau said that many men lead lives of quiet desperation. What if there is only happiness in ignorance of reality? What if dreams are not meant to come true, because when they do, we find out... well, we find out something. That is the stuff of literature.
By the way, I am a relatively happy guy. I am not bemoaning the loss of the American dream in my daily life, but perhaps to become I writer, I should...

This is my blog. My litany of why I do not write, besides the seeming hypocrisy of writing a blog...
I have ideas. And, for brief glorious moments, I have the eye of a writer. That zone when I look at the world with this amazing view of what I should be copying down. When I can see scenes everywhere in the world around me - the way someone stands, or the swing of dialogue in a conversation I really should not be listening to. I often hear that writers have this moment often; for me it is rare but still glorious.
I have ideas. Ideas I will contend are actually over rated. Everyone has ideas. And anything can be in idea. A story about nothing can be a wondrous tale in itself. I have ideas. Besides, a career can be made writing about only one idea.
Angst.
The idea is universal and cannot be over done - though an individual reader needs a break - the world at large does not.
Angst.
It works as the basis for a tale for anyone that is 12 through 32. (You can get older folks with mid life crisis angst - but that will be another blog)
Angst.
Every teenager knows it. They may live it. They may post endless updates to twitter, agonizing about backstabbing friends or incredible boredom (and of course evil parents). If they do not live it? They see it in the hallways, sit beside in in second period, see the scrawled emo band lyrics on binders, they read the posts online; they know it even if they do not live it personally.
And angst does not end there. That is why this is an idea that I SHOULD write about. And so should you. Because university does not help. Ask college graduates about what comes after the hours of studying and the days of partying and there is often worry in the eyes. How many majors get changed, how often is there a sad jealousy in the stomach when friends discuss post college connections in various industries? It's bad there too.
And after college? Sending out resumes. Friends getting jobs, getting married, and there our reader is, still confused. The reader feels like there is a connection to the angst story, it reminds that reader they are not alone. And even the employed, as they sit in the cubicle, update "TPS" reports and making sure they have a cover sheet. They wonder if there is something else out there.
So why do I not write about it?
Ah, everyone has ideas. But then what? And I get to page 8 or so and the idea runs dry. I think "I will knock this out tomorrow, 8 more pages. " Never works. My own angst I guess...
If I had a reader base, this would be the point I ask for their comments on the topic, but instead, I will go surf some other blogs and see if I can make some friends that way!

Then there are other things we can analyze.
Ink or computer?
There is a scratching beauty to ink - Sharpie pens are scratchy like a pencil and makes a person feel like they are inking their way to immortality. Then looking down at pages of work and realizing - I DID THAT.
It is easier to pen. "pen the story" When I do play around with writing, such as this little blog thing I pretend to do, it is easier to pen things down first, Once I put the pen down and the ink does its bleeding thing, there is a rhythm to things. Only when I put pen to paper do the words really flow, but I fear to lift my pen in case the words suddenly stop
When I type it, it is too easy to pause, to reflect for a moment on words I have written and stop writing I think, but thinking means the writing has stopped. The pen is almost easier to control, at least in terms of word count.
I will not claim that muse has visited me in those moments when the pen scratches across the page, but at least she looked my way, She shook her head, maybe flipped me off, but SHE LOOKED. The fear now, when the pen is in full gush, that the knock comes on the door, the text message buzzes away, a voice calls from another room. These things all break the spell (as the cliche says).
As long as the pen stays on paper, the words will come. Random, often meaningless, but they are words, and oh how those words give you something to stare at after an hour and feel like something was done.
So why don't I write? Well, when I look back and the words a couple of days later, I realize there may have been a lot of feathers, but not much chicken (yup, I ended with a Kim Mitchell reference).

Not ending, just stopping
It is tough to remember that not every story ends. Sometimes they just stop. It is like that because that is real life.
It is very hard to convince myself of that when I write. But most stories seem to end with "he looked and realized..." or "he stared at the taillights as they disappeared and wondered what would be next." Lame examples, but that is not my purpose to end some made up story. If I could end it better, I would be on an island right now writing rather than sitting on a floor blogging.
But back to the premise - things don't end. Your friendships don't really end. Unless there was a big throw down fight, it did not just end. No, it was a gradual death that has no real context to it. Perhaps a promise to see each other soon, and as literary cliche would say, sooner became later. The calls may have become more infrequent, perhaps from guilt...
But it did not really end.
Just stopped.
Like most stories.
I have to stop trying to come up with endings, just "stoppings"...

A Hushed Commentary on the Blog
So, if nothing else, starting this blog has reminded me of humility.
Suppose they gave a war and nobody came? That is my blog.
But is has only been a week you who calls your blog the Dodgy Prawn. What a dumb name. (Unless you got it from a short film and the character that said it in an English accent made it sound fantastic...) Well of course it has only been a week.
So what next?
This blog would not exist if I had not already considered the possibility that I would not have several hundred followers and dedicated readers at this point. Well, yeah it would. That was a total canard.
But now on to the meat of the blog post.
Writers are pretentious. They cannot help it. Unless they are going for the Emily Dickinson approach and may have no intentions on ever being read, almost every writer is wanting material to be read by others.
"Read what I have to say, for I am wise."
"Read, for I have lived through something and want to share my story with you."
"Read, for no one can turn a phrase quite like this one."
Now hold on imaginary readers. You might think, I AM NOT PRETENTIOUS AT ALL. You may be right. I may not believe you though.
It is what a real writer is. And here we have exhibit JJ3B4 in our display - why this fellow that has the Dodgy Prawn blog is not a writer. I use the excuse - too well - that I do not want to take the time to yell my name out at the masses to say "Hey Facebook friends, check out my blog"... cannot do it.
Besides, do I really offer anything of value besides provide a written litany of excuses why I do not write? Exactly. Read on my imaginary readers, there is more to come!

Why I did not write last Sunday. Besides, it was Mother's Day.
Rewinding in time to a day that was... yesterday...
So why did I not write today? Well, I woke up late. Tired. And a body needs its sleep, so I was only thinking of getting enough sleep to be a healthy and productive human being.
Well, then its morning, and to wake up a shower is needed. Might be too sluggish otherwise.
Then had to spend some time with those that are held near and dear.
Have to take people out to lunch, on other days, cook that lunch myself.
Yards need mowed. My own. My neighbor's yard.
Dinner needs to be found, and devoured.
And more time to be spend with family.
I am getting a bit chubby, so exercise really did happen. I walked two miles. Had to shower when I got home, then spend more quality time with those that are still held near and dear.
It's Mad Men night, is it so wrong to enjoy a moment of relaxation after going all day?
And now it is late, and would it not be better to get a good night's sleep to make sure I am extra productive tomorrow?
Yes it would.
So no writing done today. But man, am I ever going to make up for it tomorrow. I am going to write at least two chapters of something (I bet).
(As a post script, the above is a bit of a lie. I wrote a bad poem. Then I did this. Which is also writing. So my blog is the epitome of hypocrisy in a way. Not fully. I sure did not write much. And if no one reads it, did I still write it? Post script ends.)
